Not for producing a lot of test – the tapping on glass with kill your fingertips on the cold and firm glass – but for any sort of media consumption, it’s a dream. Using it to watch movies on flights and car-rides (for yourself or to give yourself a less painful trip by silencing a younger generation), you need to stuff it with film. Preparing for a week from home, I wanted to stuff my ASUS Transformer Infinity (TF700) full of video material in HD format, and this is where I have learnings to share:

External memory cards are normally formatted in FAT32. It’s a format commonly used on PC and is well spread and supported. Drawbacks: The biggest fileformat it supports is 2GB. Back when the format was defined, that was possibly the collective data storage for a normal country, but today that’s not even a full film in full resolution. (Well, properly using handbrake they should be around 1,5 GB but let’s forget about that for now). So how do we do that?

First – I am assuming that the SD card is blank and new. Any data on it’s your own responsibility.

A fresh card can be plugged into the PC and formatted to NTFS format (standard on Windows since Windows2000), by opening the explorer (Windows + E), right-clicking the units icon and selecting “Format”

Optionally, get MiniTool Partition Wizard. It’s free and it’s GREAT. REALLY GREAT. Partition Magic user to be state of the art but this is all that Partition Magic was, but for free. (Linux users would use GParted, also great and free). If you use this option you can convert the partition to NTFS without messing with existing data. This is on your own risk.

NTFS on Android is not not working perfectly for me;

Addressing the files I used a few file managers:

Total commander – works. I can access the card and it’s files.

ES File Manager- does NOT work. I see the card but the version I use returns that the card is empty

ASUS file manager – works. I can access the card and it’s files.

Playing the media content:

VLC – does NOT work. Play option didn’t work. It looked like it worked until the point where it didn’t launch the video.

BS Player – Works. flawlewssly

Gallery – does NOT work. The built in video player.

MX Player – does NOT work. Video works but it couldn’t render the DTS sound in the files I used. It works with NTFS and should hence work in most non-DTS scenarios.

QuicPic – does NOT work.

A pad/slate/tab is a very nice unit.
